Who
The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) is the leading non-governmental organisation for adult learning in England and Wales.
What
In October 2006 hark was asked by NIACE to help prepare e-learning materials as part of the Application of Online Learning programme. This programme is accredited by the Open College Network (OCN) at level 3 and is intended for staff who wish to use online learning and online methods within their learning provision to reach new and different learners.
By completing the Application of Online Learning programme, participants will gain the practical experience of being part of an online learning community, and will explore the skills and knowledge required to create their own online courses. Completion of this course can be a first step in a participant's e-learning development and participants will complete a personal action plan for continuing professional development. The programme aims to:
Support staff (tutors/managers and support staff) working in adult and community learning who wish to use online learning and online methods within their learning provision to reach new and different learners.
Provide an opportunity to gain practical experience, critical understanding and evaluation of being a part of an online community.
Provide a controlled, guided and flexible canvas to explore, experiment and learn the skills and knowledge required to understand and create an online learning course.
Why
We were approached by the project manager and awarded the contract to deliver the work based on a referal and recommendation that we would be able to deliver the modules in a very short time scale to a high standard of usability and with the necessary attention to detail required.
Where
The materials are being accessed remotely by students using the Moodle learning management system. As such they needed to be well presented and intuitive with clear signposting of progression and completion. All participants will receive at least 30 guided learning hours by participating in the induction session and 10 weeks online learning. In addition to their attendance, each participant needs to undertake at least 20 hours of independent learning, which includes preparation for assignments.
