To support Norbord's "Accidents - Zero Tolerance" campaign, Hark developed a dedicated Personal Response System (PRS) designed to help communicate work place health and safety. This campaign is targeted directly at Norbord employees to raise their awareness of safe working practices and potential work place hazards.

Who

Norbord Inc is an international producer of wood based panels with assets of USD 1.5 billion and annual sales of approximately USD 1.3 billion. Norbord operates from 15 sites across Europe and North America. Norbord is one of the world’s largest producers of Oriented Strand Board, an engineered structural wood panel, and also manufactures particleboard, MDF, hardwood plywood and related value-added products.

What

One of the challenges facing Norbord management is maintaining engagement and interest in what has been , to date, a very successful campaign. This has been achieved so far by keeping both the subject matter and the means of delivery fresh. So, prior to the launch of the PRS there has been a sustained schedule of interactive web scenarios, also produced by Hark, and the "Accidents-zero tolerance" initiative successfully integrates various media tools used at the mills, including billboards, posters, newsletters, giveaways and competitions.

With subjects as diverse as safe manual handling practices, how to work in confined spaces, fork lift operation, avoiding fire and explosion, emergency procedures, COSHH and effective waste management there is no shortage of material for the specially staged and professionally photographed mock ups of incidents using Norbord employees at Norbord sites.

Why

The aim of introducing PRS to Norbord is to deepen the already high levels of engagement with the “Accidents – zero tolerance” campaign at the same time as providing variations on the theme that are both instructive and entertaining. This means producing simple PRS extensions to the existing web scenarios as well as more involved content involving drag-and-drop, video and sound that make the most of the interactive multimedia options available. As the PRS dimension develops this will include audio recognition of different alarm types, video scenarios with choose “what happened next?” options etc.

The instant and real benefit to the Norbord trainers is that they can get a group of people together in a room and not only identify gaps in their knowledge but also generate lively interaction and debate about safety related scenarios and their interpretation.
